Latin America and the Caribbean Journalism and Artificial Intelligence in Latin America 2023 Natalia Zuazo UNESCO Montevideo  In a context of exponential growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and technological dominance in all spheres of life — economic, social, cultural, environmental, and political —, this Paper explores the impact of AI on journalism from a critical and ethical perspective, with special attention to Latin America. It addresses inequalities and challenges inherent in the implementation of AI in the region. The aim is to offer an useful tool in the continuous training of students and media professionals.  Global Reimagining Our Futures Together: A New Social Contract for Education 2021 International Commission on the Futures of Education UNESCO Our humanity and planet Earth are under threat. The pandemic has only served to prove our fragility and our interconnectedness. Now urgent action, taken together, is needed to change course and reimagine our futures. This report by the International Commission on the Futures of Education acknowledges the power of education to bring about profound change. We face a dual challenge of making good on the unfulfilled promise to ensure the right to quality education for every child, youth and adult and fully realizing the transformational potential of education as a route for sustainable collective futures. To do this, we need a new social contract for education that can repair injustices while transforming the future.This new social contract must be grounded in human rights and based on principles of non-discrimination, social justice, respect for life, human dignity and cultural diversity. It must encompass an ethic of care, reciprocity, and solidarity. It must strengthen education as a public endeavour and a common good.This report, two years in the making and informed by a global consultation process engaging around one million people, invites governments, institutions, organizations and citizens around the world to forge a new social contract for education that will help us build peaceful, just, and sustainable futures for all.The visions, principles, and proposals presented here are merely a starting point. Translating and contextualizing them is a collective effort. Many bright spots already exist. This report attempts to capture and build on them. It is neither a manual nor a blueprint but the opening up of a vital conversation. Global Beyond COVID-19: A Feminist Plan for Sustainability and Social Justice 2021 UN WOMEN  As the world learns to live with COVID-19, to emerge from the current crisis, and to “build back better”, UN Women’s new Feminist Plan for Sustainability and Social Justice is a visionary but practical roadmap for putting gender equality, social justice, and sustainability at the centre of the recovery. The Feminist Plan maps the ambitious and transformative policies – on livelihoods, care, and the environment – that are needed to build a more equal and sustainable future. To get there, calls for context-specific policy pathways, tailored political strategies, and financing. The plan identifies key levers that can create change and the actors at global, national, local levels that need to take action to move towards this vision.  Global Disability Equality in the Media: Representation, Accessibility, Management; Practical Manual 2025 UNESCO  Promoting Disability Equality in the Media Despite all the positive changes happening in newsrooms and leadership roles, diversity in the media remains a challenge.When certain groups are left out, the media fails to present all angles of a story, missing diverse perspectives and innovative ideas. Consequently, audiences do not receive the full picture, and promises of fair and accurate representation often fall short, affecting our perceptions of each other in society. It is the case of persons with disabilities, who make up 16 percent of the global population but remain one of the most marginalized groups. Media coverage frequently overlooks them, and when their stories are told, they are often framed through stereotypes. This not only creates barriers but also denies them their rights. To address this, media organizations should enhance editorial policies and representation, improve employment conditions, and foster a more inclusive environment for professionals with disabilities.The Practical Manual and Master Class provide hands-on advice to editorial teams on how to ensure fair and unbiased coverage of disability. For content producers, it details how to make media content and services accessible. Ultimately, the goal is for all participants in this ecosystem to learn from one another and promote international understanding.   Global The “Hate Speech” Policies of Major Platforms during the COVID-19 Pandemic 2021 UNESCO Montevideo  This document reports an increase in so-called “hate speech” posts on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although dissimilar, such an increase can be observed in the transparency reports of the different platforms and the surge in content moderation since March 2020.During the same period—as a result of the lockdown measures  adopted  in  most  countries  around  the world—platforms increased the use of AI tools for content  moderation.  Therefore,  we  can’t  fully  say whether the interannual growth is linked to increased posts or changes in monitoring systems.   Global World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development: Special Digital Focus 2015 2017 Iginio Gagliardone Danit Gal Thiago Alves Pinto Gabriela Martinez Sainz UNESCO  Given the success of the first World Trends report and the need for additional research, UNESCO led a second edition in the series, focusing in depth on selected digital-era trends. Countries and regional organizations have increasingly demonstrated their commitment in the context of fast-evolving policy landscape and cultural ecosystems, encompassing the different dimensions of culture through its diversity and a wide spectrum of concerned stakeholders. Today, a SIDS-specific, culture-led development vision is on the rise.Culture has a multifaceted impact on sustainable development pathways of the SIDS, from climate action, biodiversity protection and food security to economic diversification, social inclusion, gender equality or urban sustainability. The voices and aspirations of SIDS must be heard in the global policy dialogue, in acknowledgement of their priorities, opportunities and insights. International cooperation efforts by UNESCO and other organizations are also essential in identifying areas for future policy investment and adaptation at the national and regional levels.Following the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2022, SIDS are championing culture for sustainable development towards the adoption of a new Programme of Action, the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS 2024-2034.   Global Reporting on Migrants and Refugees: Handbook for Journalism Educators 2023 UNESCO  Covering migration: A challenge for journalism educators worldwide This handbook enables journalism educators worldwide to address one of the challenges of the 21st century – migration and refugee matters. In a set of thirteen modules, journalism educators are provided with a comprehensive curriculum. It covers all aspects needed to train analysis, research, presentation, marketing, and ethics of migration coverage.The handbook is unique as it comprises results of communication studies as well as political and social sciences. It has been developed by an international and cross-cultural group of media researchers, media educators and media practitioners.Journalism educators will be enabled to jump-start a new curriculum. Journalism students will learn that matters of migration and forced displacement are concerned about human beings and therefore require knowledge and awareness of accurate facts, reliable sources, ethical reporting and good practices. Experienced journalists will benefit from using the volume as a self-learning tool, and media development organizations may adapt the curriculum to their training plans.The project will impact a more comprehensive coverage of migrant and refugee matters in countries of origin, transit and destination, and a more balanced and informed public debate across countries and cultures.
