A UNESCO capacity-building programme to support living heritage safeguarding and cultural diversity in refugee camps in Greece.

In recent years, the world has witnessed threats posed by conflict situations to tangible forms of heritage, as evidenced by the destruction of historic buildings, monuments and artefacts. However, the threat that these situations exert on intangible cultural heritage has been less explored.

In this context, UNESCO, through its Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Migration and Asylum (MoMA) of Greece and with the support of the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA), is organising a capacity-building programme in Greece. The initiative will target key humanitarian operators from 30 refugee camps across Greece, as well as well as representatives of local and national authorities, representatives of the host communities, and key local humanitarian actors.

The programme includes the following activities:

  • Online Training of Trainers workshops on safeguarding living heritage in situations of conflict and displacement (29 and 31 October 2025, and 18 and 19 November 2025)
  • In-person training on community-based needs identification in the Open Facility of Temporary Reception in the ‘Schisto Attikis’ refugee camp in Greece (25-27 November 2025)

The overall objective is to raise awareness on the powerful role of living heritage as a tool for strengthened resilience and recovery of forcibly displaced communities hosted in refugee camps in Greece.
